Lorem Ipsum generator
Generate placeholder text for layouts and mockups, in exactly the length you need.
Background
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
Lorem Ipsum is a scrambled version of a passage from Cicero’s philosophical work "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. Words are cut, mixed and made up, so it looks like Latin but says nothing.
It became widespread in the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on its dry-transfer sheets, and later spread with desktop publishing software. Today it is the standard filler text in design tools and website templates.
Tips for placeholder text
- Match the real length: a headline needs a few words, a product description a paragraph.
- Test the extremes: very short and very long text break layouts most often.
- Use real copy as soon as you have it: placeholder text can hide design problems.

Frequently asked questions
What does Lorem Ipsum mean?
Nothing, on purpose. It is scrambled Latin based on a passage from Cicero’s "De finibus bonorum et malorum" from 45 BC. Because it looks like real text but can’t be read, people judge a layout by its shape rather than by what it says.
Why use placeholder text at all?
To see how a design works with text before the real copy exists: line lengths, paragraph spacing, how a card looks when the text is long. Real-looking text is more honest than "text text text".
Should I start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?
It is the classic opening and instantly recognized as placeholder text, which helps avoid it being mistaken for real copy. Turn it off if you want every block to look different.
Can I use it in production?
Placeholder text should be replaced before launch. Search engines treat it as low-quality content, and visitors find it confusing. A quick search of your site for "lorem" before launch catches leftovers.
